About Bucharest

Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is located in the south-eastern part of Romania, in the Romanian Plain (developed on the eastern half of the Moesian Platform). The largest city in Romania, also the industrial, cultural, and financial centre of Romania, Bucharest is located on the banks of the Dâmboviţa River.
First mentioned in documents in 1459, Bucharest has gone through times through a variety of changes, becoming the state capital of Romania in 1862 and steadily consolidating its position as the centre of the Romanian media, culture and arts. Its eclectic architecture is a mix of historical (neo-classical) interbellum (Bauhaus and Art Deco), Communist-era and modern styles. Between the first and second World War, due to the elegant architecture of the city and the sophistication of its elite, Bucharest was nicknamed "the Little Paris". Although many buildings and districts in the historical centre were damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes and the reconstruction program of Nicolae Ceaușescu, many still survived. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom.

Climate

The weather in Bucharest in early October is variable, with average daily temperatures of about 15-18° C, and and about 10° C at night.
Beginning of October is a rather favorable time for field trips, although it may be cool and possibly rainy in the mountains. The area of Dobrogea is usually lacking rains in October, but weather can be windy or foggy.

TRAVEL

Bucharest is accessible by direct, regular or charter flights from all main airports of Europe. The Henri Coanda International Airport is located about 15 km north of Bucharest and it takes about an hour to the city centre by bus. Regular buses connect the airport with the city centre. From there it is best to take a taxi to the hotel or to the conference.
