Invitation

The Third International Symposium on the Geology of the Black Sea Region will be held in Bucharest during October 1-10, 2011. The symposium covers topics related to the geology of the circum-Black Sea region and the evolution and history of the Black Sea. The meeting will be held under the auspices of the National Authority for Scientific Research through the National Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology - GeoEcoMar www.geoecomar.ro The symposium will be organized jointly by GeoEcoMar, the University of Bucharest www.unibuc.ro/ro/fac_fgg_ro, the Geological Society of Romania www.geosociety.ro and the Romanian Academy www.acad.ro.

Started in the 19-th century, the geological studies in the Black Sea region have accelerated in the 1970's. In the last decade, the Black Sea region became increasingly important for resource exploration (oil, gas hydrates and mineral deposits). Besides its hydrocarbon potential, significant metallic ore deposits, and industrial raw materials are found in the Black Sea region. The area that has to faces major environmental problems in terms of landslides, floods and earthquakes.

The symposium intends to stimulate dialogue and collaboration between geologists of the circum-Black Sea countries, in order to improve models and correlation across national borders, for a better understanding of the geological evolution of the area. The 3-rd Symposium on the Geology of the Black Sea Region – the 3-rd ISGB, follows the previous meetings on the geology of the Black Sea region, in 1992 and in 2009, both held in Ankara. It aims to discuss the results of geological and geophysical research in the region and provide a forum for the presentation of new geological studies and geodynamic models.

All earth scientists working or interested in the geology of the Black Sea region are invited to attend the Symposium.
